Filming Blog: Making Good Progress

Today Kayla and I began filming for our pen commercial. Fortunately, our commercial is simple in terms of props and only required a pen, paper, and some sort of desk.

Unfortunately, we did run into some problems regarding film location and were forced to work in the confines of the classroom, which was a little crowded. I'm hoping with some editing we can edit the background and keep the focus on Kayla, who was the actor. Her job was to be the main subject of the video, while I would film.

Her phone definitely came in handy for this project, due to its editing and filming capabilities. We were having issues getting the first wide shot of her walking into the classroom done, so we decided to move on and not waste our time on one shot. The first shot filmed was her sitting down at the desk and physically releasing stress. This shot went smoothly, along with the others.

We did need to do lots of re-takes for a couple of shots. The first trouble shot was the pan over to the other student who would hand Kayla the pen. The movement of the pan was difficult at first because I told the second actor to move too quickly. This made the movement hasty and sloppy. After some camera adjustments, me fixing my position, and working out a silent signal for movement, we were finally able to get it. The second shot we had to completely re-do was her confused expression. This is because our rubric required at least two different angles. We already had an over-the shoulder angle filmed, so we decided to go for a high angle. This high angle would be for Kayla's confused expression. I personally like the way it came out.

Overall, we made good progress today. We were able to get all but two of our scenes filmed and our commercial is slowly, but surely shaping up. I'm surprised we able to work around the issue of crowding and the adjustment of filming location, but it was definitely a good challenge.
