The Genre Pitch Matching Game

We’ve decided to research horror, comedy, and thriller as our genres. Our pitch was about kids getting lost in the woods, so these genres would theoretically fit our vision best.

Horror movies have often taken place in the woods for their mysterious and dark atmosphere. Features could include dead or unnaturally aggressive animals and isolated and shifty people who could live in the forest.

Thriller movies, while similar, focus more on the long, drawn-out tension rather than the fear or gore to be found in the woods. The cover of trees and woodland creatures make for heightened paranoia that can drive people mad with tension. Plus, the monotony of the woods, while possibly repetitive, can create a feeling of hopelessness, possibly setting up for more drama and tension between characters.

On the other hand, comedy is rarely done in the woods as it leaves little material to work with. With little to work with, we must be creative to come up with consistent and funny material. The comedy would also be more reliant on the characters themselves rather than their setting.

Although, to alleviate some of this difficulty, comedy could be combined with another genre. That way the comedy would feel less forced, and the film would be less reliant on its jokes to carry its weight. This is something we have been debating since we decided on our pitch. It is risky to combine genres as the execution must be well done for the themes to work together well. This rings especially true when combining such natural opposites as comedy and horror or thriller. Plus, we will have to rely on extra research to carefully display both genres in our film. While there are several obstacles in combining genres, there are some benefits as well. As previously mentioned, when combining genres, it lessens the pressure of perfectly executing each genre. For example, a horror comedy may not be as terrifying as a regular horror film, but it could be more enjoyable with comedic twists. Hopefully through our research of these genres we will be able to decide which best fits our vision and if we should combine genres to accomplish our goal.
